I was thrilled to see Context Blog’s write up of male objectification and how “we take-for-granted a world that routinely objectifies women but rarely objectifies men in the same way”. From my perspective, I’m saddened I missed the July 08 issue of Elle magazine. I miss all the good issues.
What’s really interesting is that I don’t feel any ill feelings about it, perhaps in the way feminists feel negatively about nude female depictions in fashion mags/adverstising.
In fact, I find it refreshing. Sexy. Erotic. Tempting. It’s nice to have the opportunity to appreciate a nice male nude the way men always get to do the same for a female nude. This is equality, is it not?
I makes me wonder if women create their own sense of negativity about female nudes while men might not even see it as bad as women think. I can’t imagine too many men hollering at how this objectifies them. If anything, they might say, “It’s about time you give us a little exposure!”.
That said, I disagree with one comment that appeared on the Context Blog site: “…these still fit the standard mold for ads. The woman is shown using the man’s body to support herself, is shown smiling (a sign of deference) or flooding out in some sort of shock (presumably that she’s standing around with a naked guy).” Sometimes I think we read too much into these things. If anything, she’s using him as a prop with “don’t you wish you had this” pride. Um, yeah! Phew. It’s getting a little warm in here…
Sorry. Nice body. Hot guy. I like this photo spread. Gimmie more!
